How to Prepare Your Air Conditioner for the Summer Heat

hot summer in phoenix AZ could lead to AC repairs

Spring Tune-up
  • Have a Preventative Maintenance performed on your air conditioning system before the high heat arrives
  • Have your HVAC system check and serviced bi-annually to keep your heating and cooling system operating at top performance
  • Change your Heating and/or AC filters monthly
  • Obtain an inspection report of your AC system bi-annually
  • Make any necessary maintenance repairs on your cooling system

There are a few steps you can take to make sure your air conditioning system is ready for the summer heat and is operating in tip-top shape. Below are a few of our most helpful tips when it comes to gearing up for the hot weather outside.

Schedule regular maintenance and inspections:

Be sure you schedule a HVAC system Tune-up   with a professional technician before summer hits. This will help prevent you getting stuck waiting in the heat for a AC repair. During the maintenance inspection, the technician will clean and fine-tune your system, check for any possible needed repairs that may get worse over time, and take care of adjusting any minor components so your system will operate at its best. Call Viking Heating and Air Conditioning to schedule an inspection today to keep your system operating at its peak performance.

Change your air filters:

Don’t start the summer off with clogged air filters. You should be replacing your air filters on a regular basis (at least quarterly but recommended monthly) especially if you have pets. Clogged air filters can lead to poor airflow and system performance issues. Keeping your air filters clean, allows them to filter the air in your home and prevents dust and debris from entering your HVAC system. If you are not changing your filters regularly, you are putting an unnecessary amount of stress on the whole system. As the filters clog up, your furnace must work harder to pull air through them. This not only puts an extra load on the system but also your power bill.

Test your system and thermostat:

Don’t wait until it gets hot outside to find out that your air conditioner won't turn on. You should test your AC system on a nice, weathered day when neither your air conditioner nor heater are needed. You can test your system by switching the thermostat over from heating to cooling and setting the temperature a few degrees lower than it currently is. Once you hear your system kick on listen for any unusual noises. You should also visually inspect your system by looking for excess moisture or any other signs your AC is not functioning properly.

Check your insulation:

Your home needs to have a sufficient amount of insulation to keep your house cool in the summer. The same goes for your HVAC system. Make sure to inspect the insulation around your ductwork, because improperly insulated ducts can lead to cool air getting loose which will make your HVAC system work harder overtime to maintain the desired temperature. This will lead to a shorter lifespan of your system in addition to costing you more money on your power bill.

Once all steps are complete and your system is running at max performance, you can relax knowing your system will keep you comfortable throughout the season.
